Apollo Completes Americold Extension Project

We are always incredibly proud to get the best outcomes for clients, and our recent project with multinational cold store operator, Americold, is one to celebrate.

Driven by its ongoing partnership with Woolworths NZ, Americold appointed Apollo Projects to lead the expansion of its Wiri, Auckland site. The expansion would provide an additional 14,000m2 of freezer space to their existing 7000m2 facility.

The challenge presented to our team was to bring the cost of the design down. To do this, we identified several innovative solutions that would deliver a building that was a better fit with Americold’s brief and budget.

Our response included adjusting the width of the facility’s storage aisles so that the walls could be brought in away from the property boundary, and letting the roof also act as the ceiling, instead of having both.

These changes reduced the amount of building materials needed, eliminated some expensive firewall requirements, and offered a safer building to construct and maintain. Importantly, these efficiencies brought the project costs down considerably.

While comparable projects were impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns and supply-chain issues, Apollo was still able to meet Americold’s expectations because we involve contractors very early on in the process.

Apollo Projects General Manager, Construction Aiden Knox says, “We always want to deliver a fantastic solution for our clients and stick to budget. By partnering with our contractors early, we were in a good position to reduce supply chain issues and mitigate project risks for Americold.”

“Achieving such a great outcome in the current environment is something we’re especially proud of.”

Americold is a major cold store operator, with 248 temperature-controlled warehouses worldwide.
