Project Spotlight: Chatham Islands 2021
In late 2021, Apollo Projects delivered a modern civic space, offices, and museum for Ngāti Mutunga O Wharekauri on the Chatham Islands. This community-focused facility was designed to be safe, efficient, and durable, housing local artefacts, museum staff, and council offices, as well as contractors and visitors.
Apollo carefully balanced various needs in the design, considering the island's extreme weather and remote location. We used corrosion-resistant materials, such as stainless steel fixings and long roofing iron, and practical solutions like an emergency generator and easily serviced air conditioning units. Sustainable features, such as rainwater harvesting tanks, were also included to give the building a renewable focus.
Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, including transporting materials, we completed the project on budget, thanks to early procurement processes. The positive feedback from Ngāti Mutunga O Wharekauri, the community, and visitors has been overwhelming. We are proud to have delivered this valuable asset, which not only preserves cultural heritage but also enhances the community's connection and learning opportunities.
The Chatham Islands project stands as a testament to our commitment to delivering exceptional community assets, even in the face of logistical challenges and extreme conditions.
