Project Details

One of Marlborough’s oldest wineries, Cloudy Bay, chose to partner with Apollo to deliver a facility that would enhance operational efficiency while complementing its iconic vineyard aesthetics. The result is a build that redefines winemaking in the region.

The project incorporated existing receival bins and added a press bay and two new tanks. Apollo worked closely with Cloudy Bay to challenge conventional design, prioritising safety, efficiency, and innovation.

A standout feature was the decision to build underground, a first for a winery project of this nature. This creative solution allowed for the installation of a hopper bin, de-stemmer, and must pump below ground, with grapes pumped nearly four metres up into the press. This layout significantly improved workflow and reduced manual handling.

The structure was built using pre-cast concrete slabs, service pipes, and a structural pipe bridge to carry reticulated services. A single steel canopy connects the two large tanks, while ‘smart’ tanks eliminated the need for catwalks, enabling one person to manage the entire receival and fermentation process. This approach reduces working at height and manual labour, setting a new benchmark for winery operations.

Constructed to high wind and earthquake standards, the facility was delivered in just four months, despite COVID restrictions and a record-breaking wet season. The project showcases Apollo’s ability to deliver complex, high-performance builds under pressure, without compromising on quality or design.
