Project Details

Apollo is proud to have helped turn the long-held community dream for beachfront hot pools into a reality in the Christchurch suburb of New Brighton. The complex’s name He Puna Taimoana was gifted by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tūāhuriri and Matapopore and means ‘seaside pools’.

Completed in just under 12 months, the complex boasts five hot saltwater pools of varying sizes, with temperatures ranging from 12°C to 40°C, alongside a cold-water plunge pool, steam and sauna rooms, changing and toilet facilities, reception and café areas, and first aid and staff amenities. Thoughtfully designed landscaping surrounds the facility, harmonising it with its beachfront setting while creating user-friendly outdoor spaces that enhance the overall experience.

Apollo became involved with the project at the tender stage and worked with Christchurch’s urban development agency Development Christchurch (DCL) to value engineer reduced costs and enhance the project's buildability.

Due to the small site, sandy substrate, and exposure to weather, it was best to programme the build into phases. This allowed Apollo to manage any issues and co-ordinate planning with all sub-contractors. Every detail was planned carefully and, thanks to regular and effective communication with all parties, especially DCL and architect, Andrew Watson, the project was an outstanding success.
